I agree, Rie. There’s no excuse for intolerant ignorant behaviour against any race. The offensive “n*gg*r” word doesn’t constitute a hate crime per se either, but it is an outward display of an inward attitude of bigotry, and the use of such language or actions is intended to put down another race so as to elevate one’s own. It’s very indicative of the ignorance and lack of understanding of this younger generation.

Just because someone may not like their opinions about a particular race does not give anyone the right to sue them. This is not saying what they did was right. I don’t think the gesture is racist at all. Caucasian people just happen to look silly when they stretch out their eyes (or anyone stretching out any part of their face, really.) I think Asian eyes are some of the prettiest, but it’s not really about Asians at all. It’s just making your face look silly for a photo.

Okay, this is stupid. While I do NOT support racism in ANY way, I don’t consider this racism. Honestly, it looks like he was caught at a bad time rubbing underneath his eyes. I rub my eyes like that…in fact, many girls (and guys) do; some being asian. And yes, when I rub my eyes they slant outwards like that. So does that make me and a million other people racist. The answer is “no.”
Not only that, but this picture looks like it was taken in 2006 which would make him about 16 years old. Anyone who knows anything about the boys will know that Joe went through a MAJOR hyper stage (why I have no idea). He would bounce off of walls and climb anything he could get his hands on. So I really doubt anyone should be taking this picture seriously considering the circumstances.
And while I do agree that this should be brought to his attention (I’ve already sent a message containing a weblink to them with a discription of what it says) I do not think he should be punished for it. It was a stupid mistake on his part and his youth. And to be quite honest, haven’t we ALL done something stupid when we were younger? Some things, I’m sure, MUCH worse than making fun of people.
And to be quite frank, I believe that over half of the people on this post have made fun of him, his brothers, their music, OR rich kids at some point or another (some have written proof on the above posts) so I don’t think you have any room to talk about OFFENDING anyone.

I think asian eyes are beautiful and if ANYONE makes a rude comment about them then they are obviously blind. And you shouldn’t get offended by it because YOU should know they are beautiful. I mean, people used to make fun of me because my parents brought me up to love and show everyone mercy (which was totally unheard of where I come from). It hurt me and I hated it. I even used to cry about it. But in the end I realized that I have to be stronger than them and just live my life. So I have been. And now the EXACT same people who made fun of me are telling me how wonderful it is that I’m doing so and are asking me to give them pointers on how to treat people.
So don’t fret! You rock! Just be you and don’t let anyone stop you.

As an Asian American, I honestly think that suing Miley for the picture was stupid, but I can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if a young Asian American celebrity, say, Brenda Song, made fun of white/black people. Whatever they meant by that gesture, they didn’t mean it as a compliment, for sure. It’s sad that their parents didn’t teach them not to be ignorant.
When I was in high school a million years ago, a boy came up to me, did that gesture and said “Chinese, Japanese, Dirty Knees, Look at these (pointing at breasts).” And I said “F- off, you F-ing A-Hole.” The whole school cheered me on.
As a mom, I usually discourage potty mouth. But I would encourage all you Asian American kids out there not to be doormats if anyone ever does that sort of thing to you. They are not your real friends if they think that is “funny.”
Anyway, you don’t want to be friends with people who think that constitutes a sense of humor. “Chinky eyes” is actually something kids in kindergarten do. It’s dumb and immature.
