The Vampire Diaries Recap: Episode 12 ‘Unpleasantville’
After watching The Vampire Diaries ‘Unpleasantville’ last night, I realized that Mystic Falls is the US headquarters of ‘Vampires-R-Us’ and there is some kind of super villain convention going on for the Free Katherine society – let’s make t-shirts! Here is a recap the fifties decade dance of death episode
Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is getting stalked by Anna (Malese Jow) who also happens to be a vampire. Poor Jeremy. She only wants him for one thing: the Gilbert family diary which contains the answers to releasing Katherine from her tomb prison. Fortunately, Jeremy gave the old journal with written instructions (why would you write that down??) to his history teacher (and vampire hunter/hater) Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis.)
Alaric realizes the town has at least one vamp in the form of his wife’s (Mia Kirshner) killer, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and spends a couple of moments coolly chatting with him while clutching vervain. While chaperoning the dance, he realizes Damon is connected to Elena (Nina Dobrev) because she is dating his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) and mister smart guy seemingly starts putting two and two together. Is that fueling his desire to be with Aunt Jenna? Jenna (Sara Canning) and Alaric do seem to have a genuine connection but only time will tell if Alaric is going to continue to court her just to get close enough to exact revenge on Damon.
Meanwhile Elena is getting creepy phone calls from the vampire she hit with her car last week. As it so happens, said bloodsucker is in cahoots with Anna. The hooded Noah (Dillon Casey) is toying with Elena while Anna desperately tries to get invited in to the Gilbert’s house to search for the diary. Sly Noah poses as the pizza boy and voila! he is given one lifetime admittance ticket by Jeremy as he invites the delivery guy in. Stefan gives Elena the vamp-detector compass/watch back (it was the Gilbert’s anyway!) and it goes crazy as she is getting ready for the dance and Noah is inside the house waiting to bite/turn/kill her. Stefan arrives just in time as Noah has dropped from the ceiling on to Elena. Stefan tosses Noah across the room and N-vamp runs away.
Everyone makes it to the dance including Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Caroline (Candice Accola) where Damon asks both Bonnie and Caroline to dance and they turn him down flat. Anna shows up to help jeremy (yeah right!) and so does Noah. Giving Elena another creepy phone call, he threatens to snap Jeremy’s neck if Elena doesn’t leave through the side door. Resourceful Elena grabs the only wooden thing she can find and stabs Noah with pencils! After almost getting bitten by Noah again, Elena is saved by Stefan and Damon who torture Noah to find out what he wants (Katherine and the tomb opened of course!) and who he is working with (that he didn’t give up.)
Bonnie and Caroline head to Mystic Grill where Matt (Zach Roerig) has taken a job as a bus boy. Bonnie is crushing on the bartender, former jock and current – you guessed it – vampire! Ben (Sean Faris.) After getting her flirt on with Ben (where is her witch-y poo sense now?) she agrees to go on a date with him later in the week. Caroline and Matt have a couple of communication snafu’s and in the end, as Caroline is walking home alone (in that town? Girl, you’re crazy!) Matt follows and jumps out of his truck to smooch her in the moonlight and make it all better. (Somehow I suspect kissing hot Zach will do that.) Bartender Ben does not hook up with Bonnie this episode, he does however, kiss Anna after she tells him about Noah’s demise (she was watching through the classroom doors.)
Tying everyone together is Elena’s adoption mystery. Aunt Jenna spills that her parents were trying to have a baby and couldn’t and in a moment of serendipity, Elena’s teenage birth mother happens to ask Dr. Gilbert to take her baby. Since the doctor can forge the documents, he did and Elena’s adoptive parents (the Gilberts) are listed on the birth certificate. Oh, and guess what the name of Elena’s birth mother happens to be… Isobel, the one and the same as Alaric’s dead wife, perhaps? As we find out from Saltzman, Isobel was from the Mystic Falls area. I smell an uneasy truce between Alaric and Damon in the future.
Oh so many questions came from this episode:
Is Jeremy adopted too? Is Anna walking around in the daytime (she’s met Jeremy at the library in the daytime – how’d she get there?) Is the mother of Elena (Isobel) Alaric’s killed-by-Damon wife? Is Alaric her biological father?
If/when Bonnie touches Ben, will she go off in witch mode because Ben is a vampire? Did Katherine turn most of the southern US population in the 1800s into vampires? What’s up with that? And why don’t they know about each other? Will Damon try again with Bonnie?
Will Matt and Caroline become more involved in the vampire mysteries? Where was Tyler (Michael Trevino) this episode? Will he end up a werewolf/shapeshifter?
