New York City traffic is rough on horses. PETA and Glee’s Lea Michele are calling attention to the conditions of the horses who pull carriages through NYC traffic everyday.

“Imagine for a moment that you’re forced to do hard physical labor all day, seven days a week—whether it’s sweltering hot or freezing cold outside,” Lea says. “At the end of the day, instead of relaxing on [an] easy chair or sleeping in a comfortable bed, you are locked in a tiny closet all night long.”

The horses suffer a miserable fate according to the organization: lung and respiratory diseases, leg ailments and very cramped stalls and living quarters. The accidents caused by the carriages or other motorists end in terrible injury to both humans and animals (see the PETA fact sheet here.)

Michele and PETA (among other organizations) are calling for a boycott of the rides.

Josh Hutcherson and the cast of Red Dawn strike a pose in the first photo of the reboot to hit the internet (see the full cast shot inside.)

The film has been completed for a while, but has lingered without release because of the studio’s (MGM) financial problems. Now that MGM is in chapter 11 (which is bankruptcy, but allows the company to reform, restructure and pay off creditors slowly,) Dawn may see the light of day in theaters later this year.

The 80s original version of the movie (starring Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze,) was about a band of teenagers who came together to fight the Russians invading America. The new reboot stars Hutcherson, Connor Cruise, Chris Hemsworth, Isabelle Lucas and Josh Peck who fight the fictional Chinese take over of the U.S.

Miley Cyrus is starting the new year off with a new video for Get Ur Good On.

The 18 year-old, who is back in New Orleans filming her new movie So Undercover, is doing good with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and their Breath of Life Gala.

In the video, Cyrus says she was “honored” by Christina and Ali, who gave a performance of her song “The Climb” on America’s Got Talent.

It’s the end of Swiftenhaal! Actor Jake Gyllenhaal decided to end his short-lived romance with country star Taylor Swift before New Year’s Eve because he is a very private guy and could not handle the annoying media attention.

Why am I not surprised!?! Jake seemed to be much more mature and was probably looking for the girl to spend the rest of his life with. Well, Taylor is a major star, but she is also an independent young lady – she is definitely not ready to settle down!

Lucy Hale is Teen Vogue’s cover girl for the Febraury 2011 issue.

The 21 year-old actress and the rest of Pretty Little Liars cast returned to ABC Family last night (after months of waiting!) with the new episode “Moments Later.” Hale is getting noticed as Aria on PLL and the star says she wasn’t even all that interested in acting at first. Hale says “I wanted to be a singer.”

She tells TVogue about how she got started in Hollywood, maybe music is in her future and the politics of show business:

On how she started out: “I’ve only been living here for a few years. I never thought about acting when I lived in Memphis—actually, pretty much the opposite. I wanted to be a singer. Someone randomly suggested I audition for a few things. I thought, Why not? And I got a role on [Nickelodeon's] Drake & Josh. It was literally just a sentence, but I was so excited to be an actress.”

Is she going to move into a music career? “All I can say is that if I ventured out into that world, it’d be a dream come true. I took guitar a while back, and my heart wasn’t in it at the time, but I’m ready to try it again. I sing in the car, at home—it’s a huge part of my life, especially since I’m from Tennessee. When I’m ready for it, I’m going to dive into it 100 percent.”

On how to handle the back-stabbing world, Hollywood or high school: “There’s jealousy everywhere and tons of politics. The problem is that people in L.A. never really have to grow up,” she says. “Everyone needs to chill out. There’s room for us all.” The solution she found (which, she adds, is “pretty much the same way you should deal with high school”) is simple. She says with a shrug, “Surround yourself with the right people, and realize your own worth. Honestly, there are enough bad people out there in the world—you don’t need to be your own worst enemy.”

Justin Bieber thinks he’s a little bit insane. Bieber, who is kissed on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine for the February issue, says “I’m crazy. I’m nuts. It’s just the way my brain works.” Good thing for JB, he channels that into music.

The teen pop star gives insight into his life, how he tries to stay as normal as possible and how aware he is of other celebs who’ve ruined their careers:

On His Mental State: “I’m crazy, I’m nuts … Just the way my brain works. I’m not normal. I think differently—my mind is always racing. I’m just … nuts. But I think the best [musicians] probably are.”

On His Public Image: “It’s hard to really balance myself. A regular kid, if he catches the flu, he just gets to go home … But I can’t do that…. Everything is important. But, you know, my sanity is important, too. Even if I’m angry, I’ll just put a smile on my face and fake it. I don’t often fake it—what’s me is me….I know I have to give up a lot of myself, or a lot of a private life.”

On Keeping His Head On Straight: “Of course, I think that people are just waiting for that time when I make a mistake and they’re gonna jump on it….There’s gonna be haters … I know I’m not going to make a lifechanging bad decision, as some people have. I’ve seen it happen too many times. I could be my own worst enemy, but I don’t want to mess this up.”

I don’t think Justin is crazy, but the fans who send Selena Gomez death threats because she kissed him are (see those photos here.) He’s young and should be allowed to see who ever he wants without worrying some lunatic fanatics will make her life impossible.

Poor Selena Gomez!! The “Wizards of Waverly Place” star has been bombarded with several hateful messages via Twitter simply because she is apparently dating teen superstar Justin Bieber.

Pictures of Justin and Selena doing some PDA and even kissing (photos here) while on a yacht in the Caribbean have just came out this morning. Beliebers all over the world got their heart shattered by the thought their idol now has a girlfriend.

Selena received some very unpleasant messages, which also include death threats. Here are some examples:

Oh please! Come on, Beliebers! Justin Bieber is certainly not going to date you, so face reality and be happy since your idol is happy with a new girl. It’s ridiculous! Justin is entitled to choose who he wants to date and kiss! In my opinion, Justin and Selena make a cute couple, but she is probably too old for him…

Ashley Greene got boyfriend Joe Jonas an early gift this year – Winston, the Blue English Bulldog. Jonas has been very happy and posted pics to twitter of his new pal just before Thanksgiving when he brought the pooch home.

The adorable video below shows Ashley and Joe as they first meet Winston.

As cute as the vid and Winston are, they did purchase from a breeder and that is very sad news. (The folks who uploaded the video to YouTube identified themselves in the comments section as Winston’s dog breeder.) Why not choose a shelter dog?

Greene has won PETA’s “Kind Choices” award in 2010 for aligning with Avon’s Mark cosmetics – cruelty free and not tested on animals – so I have to think she is aware of the impact of purchasing a dog from a breeder.
