Selena Gomez Says she Filmed ‘Spring Breakers’ to be Taken More Seriously as an Actress

Wait… what?

During recent interview with Interview Magazine (makes sense…) 19-year-old pop star Selena Gomez opened up about why she chose to star in the upcoming Harmony Korine release, Spring Breakers – a film about sex, drugs, partying and well, basically everything Selena isn’t!

I was getting kind of repetitive in terms of the roles I was picking, and I really wanted to do something that was completely different… It was a ‘mark’ thing for me — like, ‘This is what I want to be doing.’ I want to be taking myself seriously as an actress, and this was definitely a stretch. I mean, I’d never smoked a cigarette before in my entire life. It was really funny — they had to show me how to do it.

Fellow Spring Breaker and Pretty Little Liars star Ashely Benson echoed Selena’s sentiment and added that most of their fans shouldn’t even be allowed to see the movie!

Harmony wanted to break us all out of the good-girl mold… For Selena, Vanessa [Hudgens], and me, our audience is all in their teens or younger, so they’re not even going to be able to see this when it comes out — it’s not appropriate.

So, let us make sure we’re getting this straight. Does doing “inappropriate” movies make you a serious actress these day? Because we were under the impression that making movies that are actually good was the way to get yourself taken seriously in Hollywood. But apparently running in a neon bikini for 90-minutes does the same thing.

Go figure.
