American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta shocked the pop music community earlier this week when he announced that he plans to take a break from pursuing his music career and become a full-time missionary for two years.

Yeah, we didn’t see this one coming either.

Sources report that the 20-year-old broke the news to audience members during his “My Kind of Christmas” concert in his hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah last night.

It’s not because someone told me that I was supposed to do it, not because I no longer want to do music anymore, but it’s because it’s the feeling that I felt that I need to do next in my life…

According to concert-goers, when the audience broke into uproarious applause after his announcement, the AI alum was overcome with emotion and added,

It’s the same feeling that I’ve always tried to follow in my life. It’s the feeling that’s allowed me to have the opportunities I’ve had, the challenges I’ve had to overcome, and the blessings, too…

I’ve learned that to trust that feeling. I’m aware that I need to answer when He calls, and that’s the reason that I know I need to do this in my life.

David will join forces with the Church of Latter-day Saints for his two-year stint as a missionary and we wish him the very best of luck!

David Archuleta was invited to perform the “Star Spangled Banner” at the NASCAR Nationwide series Royal Purple 300 event on Saturday, March, 26th.

Archuleta, who was among celebrities Howie Mandel and Molly Ringwald at the racing day action, gave a lovely rendition of the National Anthem for fans.

The 20 year-old also posted a video blog for fans.

NOOO! American Idol season 7 runner-up David Archuleta was reportedly dropped by his record label, Jive Records, due to poor sales of his latest album “The Other Side Of Down”.

The 20 year-old singer’s 2010 album sold only 67,000 copies, which is totally shameful when compared with his self-titled 2008 debut album. “David Archuleta” went platinum with more than a million copies sold.

David tweeted, “Hey guys, just want to let you know you fans are awesome haha. Just want to let you know I am excited for the opportunities ahead Thanks for the support you continue to show! Means a lot. Just wanted to check in let you know things are going where I feel they should.”

David is such a talented kid. We wish him the best and hope he can quickly snag a fantastic record deal. Go David! We, Idol fans, LOVE you!

Jesse McCartney was one of many celebrities at the 2010 Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Concert at the Los Angeles shopping center The Grove.

McCartney, along with David Archuleta, Charice and Corbin Bleu performed for the audience that included California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his family. Jesse sang his hit single “Shake” and you can check the video below.

Performing together in Los Angeles on Saturday night, November 21st, teen stars Charice and David Archuleta gave the crowd a good dose of early holiday cheer for the 2010 Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at The Grove in Los Angeles.

American Idol alumni David and Glee’s Charice were perfectly paired in red and black and sang the holiday classic “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”

David Archuleta has been very busy lately but he was finally able to take a moment out of his hectic schedule and make a new blog entry. The American Idol teen spoke about his time in Washington DC and Disneyland, watching FoodNetwork shows, his upcoming Christmas special with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and his time at an elementary school Halloween parade.

The American Idol alum says that the show is like musical boot camp and he’s glad he didn’t stay with his summer job – he’s really happy he chose to follow his music dream. The singer also says he thinks about going to college to explore music more and that education is very important.

David Archuleta was in Queens, NY for the 2010 Arthur Ashe Kids Day festival Saturday August 28th. The annual event starts off the last of the major tennis events for the year: The US Open.

American Idol David Archuleta is finally putting the finishing touches on his new album titled “The Other Side Of Down”, which includes his latest single “Something ‘Bout Love” – check out the refreshing music video HERE.

The 19 year-old posted a new videoblog on his official YouTube channel (watch video below). David wrote, “I’m a space cadet today. Stoked about getting all these songs for the album finalized! We’re sooo close. Going to be doing some radio station visits this coming week. time to introduce some new David music . Jill Scott is awesome.”
