Abby Sunderland – Teen Sailing Solo Around The World – Found Safe
Written by Violet on June 11, 2010 – 9:50 pm -It’s not often sixteen year olds get to sail solo around the world so when one brave teen takes on the challenge, everyone takes note. Abby Sunderland, has attempted the adventure and she has found herself in the middle of not only the Indian Ocean, but a heated debate about what a teen should or shouldn’t be allowed to do on their own.
Sunderland set sail in her yacht, Wild Eyes, in an attempt to be the youngest person ever to circumnavigate the globe non-stop, alone and unassisted. In April she had to stop in Cape Town, South Africa for repairs and while it ended the non-stop part of her quest, Abby continued on after her auto pilot system was fixed. On June 10th, Sunderland set off her EPRIB’s (emergency beacons) after her boat was turned on it’s side and the mast snapped thanks to a storm near Madagascar. A rescue plane has spotted the teenager and her disabled boat and a nearby fishing vessel has been dispatched to pick up the stranded-at-sea teen.
Abby’s father, Laurence Sunderland, is telling reporters that his daughter’s journey is over for now, but the debate is raging on: was she too young to try it in the first place? Should her parents have stopped her? Would waiting until she was eighteen made that much of a difference? It wasn’t too long ago when the world was asking the same questions of Jessica Dubroff’s parents. Dubroff died in 1996 when she attempted a solo flight at the age of seven and was tragically unsuccessful.
What do you think? Is Abby brave or foolhardy? Are her parents supportive of her dreams or way to lenient? Sound off below!
Learn more about Abby on her official blog here and this one that her parents update.

The Camp Rock 2 star has been actively supporting and raising awareness for Special Olympics organization and says:

Daniel Radcliffe Supports The Trevor Project
Written by Violet on August 10, 2009 – 10:50 pm -Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe has stepped up to the plate to support The Trevor Project. The nationwide non-profit organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth provides counseling and a round-the-clock suicide prevention hotline for teens in crisis. By donating time and money, Radcliffe has become an essential part of the group’s program of support and help for teens and young people who are having trouble dealing with sexual orientation issues.
“I am very pleased to begin my support of The Trevor Project, which saves lives every day through its critical work,” said Daniel Radcliffe. “It’s extremely distressing to consider that in 2009 suicide is a top three killer of young people, and it’s truly devastating to learn that LGBTQ youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. I deeply hope my support can raise the organization’s visibility so even more despondent youth become aware of The Trevor Helpline’s highly trained counselors and Trevor’s many other resources. It’s vitally important that young people understand they are not alone and, perhaps even more important, that their young lives have real value.”
The actor is committed to ‘setting a meaningful example’ and hopes to do more in the future with the organization. This is a bold step for a young actor – to come out and put his money to a cause that is polarizing for so many people and truly embrace diversity. Bravo Daniel!

Rupert Grint’s Charitable Birthday Wish
Written by Violet on July 31, 2009 – 7:31 pm -As his 21st birthday approaches, (August 24th,) Rupert Grint fans wanted to do something special to commemorate his day. His UK-based fan site RupertGrint.org got together with him and his family to chose a charity to support, the one to sponsor in his honor: Teenage Cancer Trust.
Every day in the UK, up to 6 teenagers or young adults (between the ages of 13 and 24) will find out they have cancer that is approximately 2,100 new cases a year. These young people, in the midst of their already difficult journey to adulthood, suddenly find themselves faced with a possible life-threatening illness and very often receiving treatment in inappropriate facilities with inadequate support options. Teenage Cancer Trust grew by chance, out of the eagerness of a group of women to organise a fashion show to fund a children’s intensive care heart unit at Guy’s Hospital, London. The fashion show was a resounding success and the women, high on the adrenalin of triumph, were ready to take on the world. Little did they know – they had!… The women went on to raise funds to build the very first TCT unit at the Middlesex Hospital in London in 1990.”
Go to the Just Giving Page to give directly or find out about setting up a fundraiser, bake sale, walk or any other creative way to help out a great cause.
Donate what you can, either money or time to help out this cause and give Rupert a great 21st birthday present.
