High School Musical sweetheart Vanessa Hudgens turned the big 2-3 yesterday and celebrated her special day with new beau, actor Austin Butler by her side.

The actress, who will star in the 2012 releases Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Gimme Shelter, has come a long way from her HSM roots – and has looks positively fabulous the whole way.  As an extra special 23rd birthday gift, Hudgens is about to begin filming Spring Breakers with hottie James Franco and BFFs Selena Gomez and Emma Roberts.

For my 23rd birthday I got a gift certificate to Forever 21… I think I got jipped.

High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens is celebrating her 21st birthday with her favorite co-star/longtime boyfriend Zac Efron today!! She is finally old enough to go to a bar and order an old scotch! We kid, we kid! Vanessa only drinks natural, non-alcoholic beverages!

Vanessa was born in Salinas, California on December 14, 1988, and lived all over the West Coast – from Oregon to Southern California – with her parents, Gina, who held a succession of office jobs, and Gregory Hudgens, a firefighter, and a younger sister, Stella Hudgens. Vanessa and her family moved to Los Angeles after she won a role in a television commercial.

In 2003, Vanessa played a minor role in the movie “Thirteen“, where she plays Noel, a friend of Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood‘s character). She also landed a role in the 2004 “Thunderbirds” but, unfortunately, the movie was completely unsuccessful. Finally, in late 2005, she landed the role that would change her life as Gabriella Montez in “High School Musical“, opposite to Zac Efron, and the rest is history!!
